The Island Of The Blue Dolphins

One day Ramo my brother who was 6 and I who was 12 were out gathering roots when we saw a strange shell floating closer and closer to the island. Once the shell got close enough we realised that it wasn't a shell, it was a ship. Not knowing what to do my brother and I ran to our village, Ghalas-at and told our father what happend. Our father Chowing being the chief, told the people of the village of Ghalas-at to prepare them themselves for the ship's arrival. Once the ship arrived at the shore my father stood up and spoke to the Leader of their tribe. "I am Captain Orlov" he said. And my father replied saying "and I am Chief Chowing, how may we help you?" I was shocked that my father gave his secret name to this group of travelers. Everyone in our village was given two names one of which was their birthname and the other of which is your fake name given to you to protect your identity in case visitors come to our island. My mother and father  named me Karana but for saftey my fake name is Won - a - pa - lei meaning "girl with long dark hair." Captian Orlov spoke once again saying "We came to hunt the otters that swim around your island and we wish for shelter on your island."  My father granted his request under the condition that we recieve half the goods that they get on their journeys. My father and I have always been close which is good because now I could tell that he would not let them leave without us getting our half of the goods. The days went by normally, the girls and women did the harvesting and gathered supplies and the men hunted, fished, made weapons and many other things. Everyday one person would stand at the top of the hill looking at Captain Orlov and the Aleuts making sure they would not leave. One day my sister Ulape who was 14 said that she saw one of the Aleuts was a women but she was in disguise as a man. Everyone laughed at her and no one believed her. On a sunless day they packed up and tried to leave but we got to their camp before they had a chance. Almost all of the men attacked as did Captain Orlov and some of his members. They killed almost all our men including my father leaving behind less then 20 men. They took off after that, giving us only one chest of otter pelts and one that was not spoken of. Everyone lost someone including I,  Ramo and Ulape; we all lost our father. Because my father was the chief we had to choose another one, so we did. We chose Kimiki who was a responsible, kind man. For protection Kimiki set out on an adventure far out hoping to send a return boat to our island to take us to a new land. Many moons and suns passed with no sight of Kimiki, therefore we had to choose someone else. Matasaip, our new learder, led us for not long before the boat sent from Kimiki came for us. Everyone gathered their things and got in a line ready to board for a new life. Once the boats departure was happening soon Ramo remembered he left his fishing pole back in the hut. I tell him not to go or he will miss the boats departure. Once we are on the boat far from shore I cannot spot Ramo anywhere on the boat. I ask many people until I realised a little boy standing on the island with a fishing pole in his hand. I try to throw myself of of the boat, though hands are trying to keep me back. I imagine Ramo trying to survive on his own on the island and can't help myself. I make it into the water and the waves help carry me to the island. Once I got there we started a fire in one of the huts in the village Ramo says he wants to go fishing that night but I refuse, I don't want him going missing. We had a good sleep that night until i woke up alone in the hut. Ramo was nowhere to be seen. I looked many places on the island just to find a pack of wolves surrounding a boy. The boy was Ramo. I ran up to the wolves scaring them away and there on the rocks layed a dead boy. All I could think about was the fact that it was my fault. I never should of let him out of my sight when we were getting on the boat, and now he is dead and it was all my fault. I found a rock near the shore that was high enough to keep me safe from the wolves that killed Ramo. The rock had a comfortable space where I could sleep and places to put the weapons I intended to make. I never have made a weapon of any sort, that was all left to the men. Though I have seen my father making many weapons and I believe that I may know what to do. It has been ages since I and Ramo have had any company. I feel as if they forgot about us or assumed that one or two of us would have been dead by now. I needed to start thinking about myself, no one else is here so I must do the hunting and weapon creating. Many days have gone by. I have finished making my bow and arrows and my spear after many nights of work. I intend to kill the entire wolf pack but the one I want to kill first is the chief. The chief has big yellow eyes. I decided to name the chief wolf Rontu which in my language means "Fox with the bright  yellow eyes." I have decided to build a house on the island to keep me safe from the wolves. The back of the house will be the big rock I decided to sleep on many moons ago. The front will have Big whale ribs as a fence to surround my house. There will be a small hole in the ground leading to the inside of the house witch I will use as my entrance. Once I had finished my house I had to create the inside. I weave baskets to go collect water from the springs. Many nights have gone by where the wolf pack comes to my house and howles at me but I don't bother to kill them yet. One day well I was at the spring collecting water I could hear wolf steps slowley coming towards me. I could only see the chief and he was in the bushes watching me. On my way back to my house I stumbled upon a cave that do well as a house. Because it is near the spring and is Well protected. I use my spare time creating my house until finaly after about 1 season and a bit it was done. I finally got an amazing idea to use an herb that the men on the island used to use. I could put it in the spring and when the wolves come to drink it will put them to sleep but not for long. I walk to the spring preparing to put in the herb and quickly walk to the bush and watch. They all drink the water and nearly instantly fall asleep. I take the chief home with me and soon Rontu grows quite fond of me and follows me everywhere. Things go by well for a long time and after the seasons have passed twice finally a boat comes to our island. It takes two days for the boats arrival.Once it does come all of the men stay and work on something near the boat but one women leaves onto the island. Afew days later I had the chance to meet this girl. She spoke a different language then I but we seemed to understand eachother by hand gesters. She always complimented the skirts that I made and she gave my a necklace that went around my neck not twice but three times. In return I begin to make her a gist to but before I get the chance to her boat left. Many moons and suns later my life continued as if no one remembers me.  One night Rontu decided that he did not want to stay for the night so I let him go. In the morning I go search for him. I finally do find him and I begin to carry him home but as soon as I let him down on the ground he died at my legs. Days went by that I misse Rontu but adventualy I find a wolf that seems to look exactually like Rontu and I capture him. Just like Rontu he soonley gets used to me so I decided to name him. I name him Rontu - Aru wich in my language means Rontu son. I left Rontu inside the house because I did not want him outside so soon. When I am walking back I watch the waves slowley go down into the ocean and nearly imediatly crash against the entire island and then come back in a different direction and the two waves CRASH against each other. Luckyly I grabbed reach of a crack in the stone and survive. When I get back Rontu - Aru is right there next to me wondering if I was okay. Like always Suns and moon pass by quilckly with nothing going on until one day a boat comes to our land and offers to take me with them to there island. I acept and I am off to begin my new life.
